Dead End

Thursday, January 26th, 2006

Once again I feel dreadfuly inadequate in most every area of my life, be it work, a husband, a father… you name it.

It’s like forever trying something and never quite reaching your goal. Like trying to make something run over and over again and it keeps crashing down.

It’s frustrating.

Where do I go wrong?

Am I not trying hard enough?
Am I not trying the right things?
Am I hearing the wrong things?

I don’t know what to do.

A week in recap

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

Oh my! I can’t believe it’s been two weeks since I last jolted down some thoughts! Scary how time can fly at times.
Well, this last week was… interesting to say the least. Brianna and her husband Kevin came to stay with us for a week and it did not go as well as we had hoped for. In fact, it went so badly that all future plans to have someone stay at our house for any amount of time now have a serious amount of fine print to them:
All house guests must

  • provide their own transportation,
  • take care not to repeat the same story three times within a week,
  • ensure not to speak for more than 30min straight without interruption,
  • be thoughtful of the religious beliefs of others for others may lose patience and rip their beliefs to shreds in return,
  • be aware of what that over-emphasizing points of their beliefs makes them look shallow and/or seemingly guilty-feeling,
  • have made some kind of preparatory plans outlining their expectations for the duration of their visit,
  • not expect 27/7 entertainment,
  • refrain from cursing, especially if it means using the words dumb and stupid or any variations or combinations thereof more than 15 times in a 1-minute lapse.
  • watch the beginning of a show if they suspect that at any time during the show they might become interested to any degree to avoid having to submit those who want to enjoy it to a recap of previous events.
  • abide to Bambi’s mom’s rule: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.”
  • refrain from bad-mouthing people who are not present
  • not critisize people for the same shortcomings that can bee seen in themselves
  • not cook something that does not have a spelled-out recipe (printed or hand-written)
  • have spent ample in-person 1-on-1 time with us prior to their visit to qualify

I mean that was just silly. It was almost as bad as having my parents over for a week. Actually, it was a combination of having my parents over and keeping someone else’s children.
Well, at least now we know that we have next to nothing in common. This week is going to seem heavenly after last, no matter what all goes wrong (if anything)!

First week of 06 recap

Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

So, here’s the first week of 2006, well, at least the first half of the first week ;-)

Sunday…

Ryan and Troy taught one kick-bottom class, well actually two classes. Still can’t believe Troy used Rafiki to get the point accross. Silly but effective. And the lesson about lifting one-self and then giving others a hand up so went hand-in hand with my 06 goal-sheet!

The afternoon was mostly quiet, homey, playful. Rather nice. Then once the cuties were in bed we continued to watch Lost. It seems wanting to turn into a soap opera which means the season will NOT get finished. I kinda miss

Gillian is being quite something else. She’s much more attentive and really likes to be involved in any kind of activity. It’s sweet. We started to read Steward Little and she’s doing a great job listening. I wouldn’t have thought she would but she is. And she’s actually asking for more of the book. So sweet…

Monday…

Monday turned out to be a cleaning day. While Liam and Gillian were more or less happily playing outside (Paige came along too which caused a little bit of trouble). We raked leaves up in the front yard and along both sides of the house and clipped off some more of the bushes trying to overcome the neighbour’s fence. We filled 15 45 gal. bags. Not too shabby! Afterwards Gillian and I cleaned up the garage. It was mostly to check if the mice got into anything in there, but none of the cardboard boxes have been touched. Surprising… Surprising also that the poison we put out is completely untouched. So some new poison was bought and distributed among the critters. We’ll see how well that does!

We also continued Lost. Some of the suspense was back but… it is so awfully s-l-o-w moving. Ah well. We shall see what disc 4 yields when it arrives…

Tuesday

Tuesday ended up being the busiest day! In the morning we took the kids to Toys R us as they had requested. Then, after lunch, Gillian and I went to the Library to return all the overdue (*sigh*) items and ran to the store to get some more food while Roo organized a sitter so we could go to the movies. We went to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at the IMAX, figuring we were the last ones in the US to see it. It was a lot darker than expected, but then the books get darker too. Towards the end, I sure was glad that Gillian didn’t come with us as we contemplated before. Poor thing would’ve had nightmares!

Then I made a huge mistake… I insisted we watch War of the Worlds once the kids in bed. There go two completely wasted hours… Ah well.

Though when we did get home from the theatre, poor Liam was so insecure. I guess he wasn’t too sure about us being gone when he woke up. Poor thing.

And all that leads us to…

Wednesday

Which turned out to be a completely ordinary work day… Blah!
