So it would appear that today was the first time that a DOS attack on one of our sites was actually successful; someone (who looking through some Danish blogs and somewhat confirmed by a trace on the offending IP) known as a Saudi-Arabian hacker group. Though it looks like someone in Germany either helped them or attempted a second DOS around the same time if not just later. Sadly for the both of them, they didn’t calculate the time right as they performed the DOS around 11am our time which would be when Roo was working on the DK so we noticed the problem within less than half-an hour and they didn’t have time to gain access to the entire server or to do more damage than they did (deface the front page and plant two trojans) before the passwords were changed and the files removed.
Unfortunately for us, the software upgrade which followed us fixing the site caused us having to rewrite part of the templates due to a WordPress change between 1.5 and 2.0.
Ah well. It was an adventure.
The sad thing is though there was no gain for them in the affair except a very short-lived glory. It’s so hard to understand why some people would write such a message though… I guess it’s because the loudest voices are always the troublemakers when it comes to poltics. But why hack a fansite of all things!
